Indesign: CV Design!

  • I want to create a header design with my own illustrations - so I just used a blank pink rectangle to pitch this area.
  • I downloaded some black icons to visually represent my contact details like email/phone number/website/instagram etc.
  • I downloaded the Champagne Limousine font to try out because I wanted a simple and clear font to work with for my CV.
  • Also I want to use a more professional photograph but I haven't got one yet so this will need to be done.

Fabulous Fashionistas

After a recommendation from a friend I watched Fabulour Fashionistas, a documentary on Channel 4 looking into the lives of age 70+ women who were stylish and FABULOUS.

I loved it and it really reminded me of the Iris Apfel film I watched recently. I think the greatest thing that age has given these women is a confidence and fearlessness in their fashion and their lifestyles, they no longer are concerned about pleasing society over pleasing themselves.

I think it is great that these programmes and films are being made because their are so many fabulous older people in our own lives that we constantly learn from that aren't represented in the media.

I was researching the biology behind viewing artwork etc because I was helping my friend brainstorm for her Fashion Communications project - it is also just quite an interesting subject.

Artist Research: Ronit Baranga - Creepy Work

http://hifructose.com/2016/03/09/ronit-baranga-brings-objects-to-life-in-cringe-worthy-new-sculptures/

I liked this work because it evokes quite a repulsed reaction in the audience - for my friends Fashion Communication project she was looking into how to get the audience involved in a projection, I was thinking causing a strong emotion such as repulsion would allow them to be moved (even if not in the nicest way) by the piece.

Mother's Day Card

This is my Mother's Day Card! I used gouache and then added details with a black fine liner pen. I looked at images of peacocks to develop an understanding of their form, and then I just painted and drew it from my imagination using creative freedom with the poses and general appearance of the peacocks. The original image was a much larger piece with three baby peacocks (these illustrations can be seen on the blog post linked below) but this illustration didn't look as professional or finished as I wanted because of the layout and composition. Cropping it meant that I could focus in on the protective elements of the idea of a mother and the cute vulnerability of the child being kept safe. It also focuses in on the most recognisable aspect of the peacock- its tail.

Visiting Lecturer: AOI (Association of Illustrators)

This lecture was really useful in telling us the details and complications of working as an illustrator. It reminded me that it is a business, there are laws and specific requirements. I think she really inspired me to join the association or at least buy their guides because they are such a good source of help on this specific subject.

Scale

Looking at Rebecca Leveille's illustrations inspire me to work at a larger scale and to be more ambitious and spend more time on pieces. I much prefer these new vibrant pieces to her older dreamlike work- these bold colours are definitely more me - I love how they grab your attention and are not afraid to clash or stand out. I like the effect of the outline in blue around the pale skin and yellow sofa etc as it ties into the blue 'stringy' background and links these striking colours together in the piece.

Weird Science Photographs and Illustrations

"This illustration shows the internal structure of an Ebola virus particle, with the central core in three dimensions so you can see the internal structures more clearly," says visual artist Rob Kesseler, professor at Central Saint Martins at the University of the Arts London.
The Ebola virus is about 100 nanometres (0.0001mm) wide - 200 times smaller than many of the cells that it infects.
"The illustrator chooses pastel colours rather than tonal contrast to show the different elements of this tiny, often lethal virus.
"It shows how illustration can uniquely show many different levels of detail simultaneously, with great beauty and clarity."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-35744907

It is really nice to see illustrations being included and appreciated alongside other scientific photography. It shows the serious, informative and educational purposes that illustration can be used in and be more appropriate, than photographs and other media, for.

It wouldn't be right now, I'm buried in work too so I know that feel. It would most likely be more towards the summer / over the summer. I'm writing a script which goes into production around October, I have a few ideas for a few characters and I'd love to see what a creative mind such as yourself would design their appearance like. I'll give you basics, character description, back story etc, and then I'll let you play see what you can come up with.

Botticelli Reimagined at the V&A

Website: Mobile Compatible

I was having difficulties with my website when being accessed through a mobile device because the images can up really spaced apart and really small on the screen (even though they were high resolution so you could zoom in- but it just failed to look very professional).

I tried to change the display themes and settings on my website but my current theme is one of the only ones which allows me to have a featured image by the 'A Wasp in a Wig' heading. The others did have it sometimes but we're usually very large which got in the way of the rest of the page. I much prefer just having it as a constant at the top left side of the page. Also I prefer the negative space (white) on this website design to others with black and grey backgrounds. I find this creates a much clearer and professional appearance and also juxtaposes and draws attention to my thumbnails well because they are quite detailed and colourful.

So changing the display theme would not help. But on settings I discovered a part talking about mobile and android design which I tried out and I am so happy with it! As you can see in the images below all of the projects and images are tightly fitted and ordered together and the page can be navigated really easily on a phone or device! This makes my website so much better and more professional because as our tutor told us, if art directors etc are commuting they will not want to waste any time zooming or loading things.
This is the Homepage part - all projects are visible here. Once you click on one it takes you to the page of the specific project and you can scroll to see the images or click right or left to view another project.

Here you can see my recent post on my Kerala inspired yoga pose prints.

Commissions: Alex Elise

Size: A4
Media: Pencil
Price: £15
Deadline: Friday 4th
Purpose: For Mothers Day.

I did this piece in pencil and the same gold dotted background as Sarah and Abbie's portraits because she saw theirs and wanted one with the same tone and design. This took a couple of hours to get all the proportions and likeness right but it was really easy to do because it was just a simple illustration fully based on one photograph reference.

Feedback: Alex was really happy with the illustration and said she would definitely be sharing my name on to others who want a picture. However I did also write my name and contact details for my professional social media's on the back of the illustration!
