OUIL402 PP1: Research: Geishas: Timeless Beauty

Geishas are a timeless beauty both historically and personally.

Experience is celebrated, perfection is never attained so the more practice in her arts, the better a geisha she is.

They have also managed to survive throughout so much turmoil in Japan.

Western society needs to learn to appreciate the lessons we can learn from elders and the experience needs to be celebrated and admired.

Geishas work into their 80s and 90s. They never stop practicing their arts. As a meiko (apprentice geisha) their appearance is represented to be child like, they wear bright colours and their obis are high on their bust to give this child like shape. Their sleeves and obis are long. It is only after at least 5 years of training that they may become a geisha, 'the turning of the collar' from red to white, which is when the far more subtly beautiful kimonos and more womanly shape and bun hairstyles come into play. The beauty is in this more mature appearance because it symbolises professionalism, grace, elegance and class.
